Discussion Group: Nationalism, State Violence and Memory in Turkish History — Freie Universität Berlin (3, 17, 24.11.2026)

Students of Ottoman and Turkish Studies at Freie Universität Berlin are organising a discussion group on “Nationalism, State Violence and Memory in Turkish History”, under the supervision of Prof. Hartmann. Conducted in English, the group explores late Ottoman and modern Turkish history, with particular attention to topics shaped by silence, taboo and denial.

Through shared readings and open discussion, participants will examine the construction of national identities, the boundaries of belonging and exclusion, and their relationship to forced displacement, genocide and state violence. The sessions aim to provide a respectful space for comparing scholarly interpretations and considering how these histories are remembered, debated and contested today.

The first three sessions will take place on 3, 17 and 24 November 2026, each from 16:00 to 18:00.

Venue: Room 1.2051, FU Holzlaube, Fabeckstraße 23–25, 14195 Berlin (U-Bahn Dahlem Dorf).

To join, scan the WhatsApp QR code on the flyer or register by emailing atikdisevil@gmx.de. Readings and venue information will be shared in the WhatsApp group.
