Kizilbash/Alevism-Bektashism Symposium: New Corpora, Databases, and Digital Tools in Ottoman and Contemporary Contexts (22 May 2026)

The Kizilbash/Alevism-Bektashism Symposium will take place at Wolfson College, University of Oxford, on 22 May 2026. Convened by Dr. Yeliz Teber, the symposium brings together scholars working on Kizilbash/Alevi-Bektashi history, material culture, manuscripts, visual culture, ritual practices, sites of violence, transnational mobilisation, and digital humanities.

The one-day symposium focuses on new corpora, databases, and digital tools in the study of Ottoman and contemporary Alevi-Bektashi contexts. It will explore how digitisation, mapping, manuscript studies, visual analysis, movement notation, and archival projects are opening new perspectives on Alevi-Bektashi history, cultural memory, religious practice, and community heritage. The programme includes panels on book and material culture, rituals, networks, and sites of violence, and the Alevi-Bektashi Digital Archive Project (ABDA).
